About Travel to Koh Tao
Two transport operators (Montanatip and Boonsiri High Speed Ferries) are now providing joint bus and ferry services from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Tao. These services are relatively inexpensive, and they are also much simpler than travelling independently from the airport to Koh Tao via Central Bangkok.
- Location of Suvarnabhumi Airport:
Before the introduction of direct bus and ferry services from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Tao travellers had two public transport options:
- Fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui and then travel by ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Tao.
- Travel into Central Bangkok by taxi or suburban railway services to board a bus or a train to Chumphon, and then to take a ferry to Koh Tao.
Flying direct from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Samui and then taking a joint bus and ferry service from Samui Airport to Koh Tao is definitely the fastest way to complete the journey. The flight time from Bangkok to Koh Samui is just over 1 hour, and by joint bus and ferry service the journey from Samui Airport to Koh Tao is scheduled to take from 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes depending upon which service you take. It’s a lot quicker than taking a bus, however, travelling via a flight to Koh Samui is at least 3 times as expensive, and at busy times of the year flights from Bangkok to Koh Samui sell out months in advance.
Travelling from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Tao via Central Bangkok is generally the cheapest option so long as you avoid the use of taxis to travel to a bus or a train station. Out of the various different bus and train routes you can take the cheapest way to travel by public transport from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Tao is generally to:
- Take the Airport Link (suburban railway station) to Makkasan Train Station.
- Then switch to the MRT (metro) for the second stage of the journey from the airport to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
- From Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal take one of the 10 train services a day to Chumphon.
- Finally at Chumphon Train Station board a joint bus and ferry service direct to Koh Tao.
Compared to travelling via Central Bangkok, it’s much more simple (and only slightly more expensive) to take a bus and ferry service direct from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh Tao. Bus services depart to Koh Tao from outside the terminal building and there’s no need to negotiate Bangkok’s local transport network, queue for local transport tickets, search for change, or book multiple train, ferry, and bus tickets. It’s the easy option because all the hard work is done for travellers by the transport operator.
- Location of Koh Tao Pier:
All joint bus and ferry services from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Koh follow almost exactly the same route, although different companies use different ferry piers for the last part of the journey by sea to Koh Tao:

The distance travelled is from 705 km to 715 km depending upon which ferry pier the transport operator is using, which is either Thung Makham Noi Ferry Pier (Montanatip) or Chumphon Paknam Pier (Boonsiri High Speed Ferries).
- Stage 2: The second and final part of the journey is from the mainland ferry pier in Chumphon Province to Koh Tao. Both transport operators use high speed catamaran ferry services for the sea crossing, with one service being slightly slower than the other because it stops briefly at Koh Nangyuan en route:
