About Travel to Surat Thani Airport

There are several different ways to travel by public transport from Penang to Surat Thani Airport. One option is to be take a train from Butterworth Railway Station, which is on the mainland, to Padang Besar Railway Station where you can change to a Thai train service for the remainder of the journey to Surat Thani. Another option is to take a minivan from George Town, the main city in Penang Island, to Hat Yai in Thailand and then change to another bus or minivan service for the last stage of the journey to Surat Thani.

There are, however, currently no flights from Penang to Surat Thani.

The problem with travelling by train or regular scheduled bus or minivan services from Penang to Surat Thani International Airport is that none of these services go direct. Surat Thani Railway Station is 18 km from Surat Thani International Airport, which is closer than the city centre bus stations, however, there are no public bus services or connecting railway services between the train station and the airport so travellers are still reliant on using taxis.

• Location of Surat Thani International Airport:

A much easier, and in the end often cheaper, way of travelling from Penang Island to Surat Thani International Airport is to take the Raja Ferry bus service. This service departs from the bus station under the Komtar Tower, which is located right in the centre of George Town in Penang Island within easy walking distance of Chulia Street.

The Raja Ferry bus service is scheduled to take 14 hours to travel just over 500 km by road to Surat Thani International Airport. The reason the journey takes that long is that the bus will stop a number of times during the journey. The first stop is at the border with Thailand where passengers need to leave the bus to complete immigration procedures for exiting Malaysia, and then a second set of immigration procedures for entering into Thailand. The next stop during the journey is in Hat Yai where some passengers will alight from the bus and others will board. After that the bus will stop again in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Passengers will have the opportunity to leave the bus to use the toilets and buy food and drinks in Hat Yai and Nakhon Si Thammarat as well as during a scheduled comfort break.
