About travel to Hat Yai Airport
Pak Bara Pier is the closest mainland pier to the islands of Koh Lipe, Koh Tarutao and Koh Balone. The journey from Koh Lipe to Pak Bara Pier takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hour depending on weather conditions and which company you travel with. From both Koh Tarutao and Koh Balone it’s a much shorter sea crossing of only 30 minutes to Pak Bara Pier.
Location of Pak Bara Pier:
Pak Bara Pier is conveniently located in terms of its closeness to the islands, however, not in terms of accessibility to public transport. The nearest bus or minivan station is 10 km away by road in the tiny town of La-Ngu. From La-Ngu the only long distance bus or minivan services are to Hat Yai. For this reason if you arrive into Pak Bara Pier your best option is to take one of the minivan services that travel direct to Hat Yai.
Location of Hat Yai International Airport:
When you arrive at Pak Bara Pier you need to exit the small port area. The minivans are waiting for passengers in the car parking area beyond the pier. We recommend printing your ticket out to show to the drivers and other staff to direct you to right minivan, as there will be a few different minivans waiting all of which may look quite similar. If you haven’t pre-booked a minivan ticket then you may have difficulty in securing a place in a minivan. Once you have boarded the right minivan its a 117 km journey to Hat Yai Airport. The journey takes around 2 hours because the roue is mostly along small roads. Because the journey is only 2 hours minivans tend not to stop on route so we recommend using the toilet, and buying anything you need for the journey, before you set off.
