About Travel from Koh Tao to Phuket Airport
There are several different routes you could take from Koh Tao to Phuket International Airport.
One option would be to take a ferry from Koh Tao to Chumphon and from there to take a bus to Phuket. By joint bus and ferry service it takes from 2 hours 30 minutes to 9 hours to travel from Koh Tao to Chumphon depending upon which ferry service you take. From Chumphon it takes 8 to 9 hours to travel by bus to Phuket. It then takes another hour to travel from the main long distance bus station in Phuket, Phuket Bus Terminal 2, to Phuket International Airport.
- Location of Lomprayah Koh Tao Office (Maehaad Pier):
Another route you could take from Koh Tao to Phuket International Airport is to travel via Surat Thani on the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry service. The Lomprayah High Speed Ferry service departing at 09:30 from the Lomprayah Pier in Mae Haad, Koh Tao, travels to Surat Thani via the islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
The sea journey with the Lomprayah High Speed Ferry company from Koh Tao to the mainland is scheduled to take 3 hours 15 minutes, arriving at 12:45. The point of arrival is Donsak in Surat Thani Province. The ferry pier in Donsak, Laem Thuat Pier, is located 65 km by road from Surat Thani city centre.
- Location of Phuket Airport International Terminal:
There is no public transport available at Leam Thuat Pier in Donsak. Travellers need to prearrange their own onward transport, which most visitors do by booking a joint ferry and bus service at least as far as Surat Thani city. From Surat Thani city centre there are lots of different bus and minivan services that travel to Phuket Bus Terminal 2, but none that travel direct to Phuket International Airport. This is inconvenient because the airport is located 28 km to the north of Phuket Bus Terminal 2 and the journey takes at least 50 minutes.
Taking a joint bus and ferry service from Koh Tao to Phuket International Airport is the only way to travel by public transport direct to the airport, avoiding the long detour south to reach the island’s main long distance bus station.
From the ferry pier in Donsak (if you have booked a direct service) it takes a further 5 hours 15 minutes to travel 265 km by road to Phuket International Airport. About 3 hours 45 minutes of the overall journey time is spent driving. The other 1 hour 30 minutes is taken up with comfort breaks, and the time it takes to transfer passengers from the ferry to a minivan and then to change vehicles again in Surat Thani city.
