Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi

Tonsai Pier is the main long distance ferry pier on the island of Koh Phi Phi. This is the pier where the majority of ferries and speedboats arriving from, and departing to, Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta and Koh Lipe use. The other passenger pier on Koh Phi Phi is located on Laem Thong beach in the north east of Koh Phi Phi. Andaman Wave Master ferry services to and from Phuket are the only regular scheduled passengers services which currently use Laem Thong pier.

About Tonsai Pier

Tonsai Pier is located on the south side of Koh Phi Phi in the thin central spit of land sandwiched between Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Beach. As well as long distance ferry services lots of types of other boats use Tonsai Pier from small wooden longtail boats to larger vessels used for transporting cargo to the island, diving boats and local tour boats. Because Koh Phi Phi is only accessible from the mainland by a lengthy sea crossing Tonsai Pier and the rest of the bay is usually crammed full of every kind of sea vessel you will ever see normally operating off the west coast of Thailand. Tonsai Pier is a very busy place, particularly during the tourist high season, which means the very beautiful Tonsai Bay is rendered unusable for swimming.

Facilities at Tonsai Pier

Tonsai Pier is little more than a series of concrete jetties protruding into the sea. There are no facilities at Tonsai Pier, not even a toilet or a place to sit in the shade whilst you wait for your ferry. Tonsai Pier is, however, right on the edge of the very busy small main town on Koh Phi Phi which has lots of shops, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses. If you need to eat or drink something, or use a toilet, or buy something, then you should use the facilities in the town or on your ferry or speedboat because there is nothing whatsoever in the way of conveniences at Tonsai Pier.

Local Transport at Tonsai Pier

The streets around Tonsai Pier are very narrow and inaccessible for cars and motorbikes. The only overland transport you see in this area is hotel staff pushing carts with luggage and sometimes children through the streets from the pier to their hotel. For destinations on Koh Phi Phi outside of the small main town area you can take a taxi boat. Taxi boat operators wait around the entrance to Tonsai Pier touting for business. The cost of a taxi boat depends on where you are going, how many of you are travelling and how good your negotiation skills are.

• Tonsai Pier is located on the edge of Tonsai Village, which is the main town in Koh Phi Phi and where most of the accommodation is located.

Ferry to Koh Lanta

The slower and cheaper ferry services from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lanta take an hour to complete the journey, the more expensive speedboat and fast ferry services take only 30 minutes. Unless you are in real rush then the slow boats represent much better value for money.

Ferry to Phuket

There is a choice of travelling by speedboat (1 hours) or ferry (2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes) from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket.

Ferry to Koh Lipe

Its a long journey from Koh Phi Phi to Koh Lipe (over 4 hours) and the only types of boat which do this journey are speedboats and fast ferries, both of which are cramped. The Tigerline Travel ferry is the largest boat with the most room inside on this route, however, this service does a lot of drop offs and pick ups on route which can sometime affect the punctuality of the service by a number of hours.

Ferry to Krabi Town

The journey by ferry from Koh Phi Phi to Klong Jilard Pier near Krabi Town takes a fairly standard time of 1 hour 30 minutes.
