Located on the Tonpo Alley just 300 metres walk from Surat Thani Night Boat Pier, Surat Thani Night Market takes place every evening between around 15:00 and 21:00. This nightly event is very popular with the local population and it gets busy particularly on Saturday nights, as it is located near another large market: Surat Thani Saturday Night Market. If you are in Surat Thani for the night or waiting for the Night Boat to depart go along to look and eat some really interesting and authentic Thai food at very cheap prices. If you are staying slightly out of Surat Thani city centre at one of the better hotels, such the Diamond Plaza Hotel, you can hire a tuk-tuk or a motorbike taxi for less than 100 THB to take you there. It is easy to get back to your hotel from the Night Market as there will be a constant stream of people arriving by tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi.
Surat Thani Night Market is primarily a food market
There are a few stalls selling clothes and other items, however, the vast majority of the stalls sell food. The majority of people come here to eat or buy snacks or just enjoy the atmosphere of a busy market.
Markets in South East Asia has traditionally been focal points of local community life and entertainment, and this is very much the case with Surat Thani Night Market: its fun and a good opportunity to see the ‘real’ Thailand. It is also an opportunity to eat authentic Southern Thai food which you will not generally find in restaurants. There is also a range of foods which are foreign influenced and less spicy such as salads, sushi and fried chicken.
Variety of Foods are on Sale
Surat Thani Night Market stretches along a pedestrianised stretch if road 190 metres long. The stalls are crammed in side by side along both sides of the road giving visitors a choice of approximately 150 different food stalls. Before you buy your dinner we recommend that you walk up and down the market and see the full range of food items that are on offer.
For the adventurous travellers, we recommend trying some very authentic Southern Thai dishes. Yellow curry (moo kling in Thai), which is a dry spicy curry of minced chicken, is a speciality of the region as is orange curry (geang som in Thai. Small BBQ fish with Thai salad and cold noodles with fish curry are also popular Southern Thai dishes you will find on sale at Surat Thani Night Market. Expect to pay around to 40 to 60 THB per large dish, slightly more for seafood dishes, and around 10 to 20 THB for smaller snacks.
Not all the food is spicy
Southern Thai food is traditionally thought to be the most spicy food in Thailand, but not all the food they all the dishes eaten in the South of Thailand are spicy. Deep fried chicken grill meat or fish is sold by a large number of the stalls at the market. Also there are stalls selling Western style salads, often with a few changes reflecting the Thai style of cooking, pizzas, sushi, sandwiches, steak, fries and hamburgers.
For the intrepid dinner we also suggest that you finish with some traditional Thai sweets (khanom wan in Thai). Popular Thai sweets on sale include sticky rice topped with pandan flavoured custard, sweet sticky rice with banana steamed in a banana leaf, and layered green egg custard flavoured with pandan (khanom chan in Thai).
