Travel in Koh Phangan
There are only two types of public transport in Koh Phangan: motorbike taxis and shared taxis. As you walk away from your boat at the ferry pier in Koh Phangan you will be approached by lots of motorbike taxi drivers and touts working for the shared taxis. The way it works on Koh Phangan is that the shared taxis operate a fixed pricing system, and the prices you will get offered by the touts as depart from the ferry are the same as the prices you will pay if walk to find a shared taxi for yourself waiting in the car park. They will only negotiate a price with you if you want to hire a whole taxi. The going rate is 200 THB per person for the journey to Haad Rin, and 300 THB to go to Haad Yao, Chalokulum or Thong Nai Pan. There are, however, no fixed prices for motorbike taxis and the driver will attempt to get you to pay 1.5 to 3 times the price you might pay after careful, polite and firm negotiation. If you have pre-booked accommodation it may be cheaper to get them to arrange to send a car to pick you up at the ferry pier.
